Joint Strength Comparative Test

There are already two blogs on the site about joint strength but to reinforce the validity of the claim that dowel joints are as strong if not stronger than all other jointing methods, including mortise and tenon joints, I felt it would be useful to point out the aricle in Furniture and cabinet Maker Issue 219 June 2014 on relative joint strength.

Six joints were constructed of the same materials and to the same dimensions and put under identical conditions of stress.

The results are shown below.

Joint                            Failed at PSI number.

Biscuit                              180

Domino                            400

Mortise and Tenon             420

Pocket hole                       280

Zeta P2 system                  180

Dowelmax dowel system      680

The results show that the dowel joint made using the Dowelmax Jig is 61% stronger than the traditional mortise and tenon or Domino.  The tester concluded that this was probably due to the Dowewlmax Jig making perfect alignment a reality every time.

More detail and pics are given in the article and it is well worth a read.
